Full Moon Fever
Post Full Moon Fever
by david.donaldson on 07/03/2009 16:25

My absolute favourite time to be out on the water is on a calm summer night with a full moon. Looking at the calendar we have four dates:

Tuesday July 7, Thursday August 6, Friday September 4 and Sunday October 4.

I'm thinking we put in @ Sunnyside park, paddle down to the islands (outside the breakwall if the weather cooperates) loop around the islands, in the eastern gap and back through the harbour/islands... or Cherry street and loop around the islands... it's open for discussion.

I am not available July or September, but would love to go August and/or October.

Thoughts?

HI Dave!

I'm marking in my calendar right now! Weather permitting of course! I could be bringing along 1 or 2 more paddlers too.

Post Sadly
by YakingYaker on 07/24/2009 14:04

Hey Dave

Sadly I cant make this one. Being on a thursday night I would be arriving home in time to head to work, and not being as young as I use to be I'm to smart to do that kinda thing to myself.

But keep me notified about that Orangeville paddle you were talking about before.

The August one sounds doable to me. Will let you know. I would prefer the Cherry Beach put in personally.

Post details of plans...
by david.donaldson on 08/03/2009 12:25

K, had a look a the forcast. Mix of sun and cloud Thursday, Friday clear... so hoping that is one of those clearing Thursday night... The Marine forcast is winds westerly @ 15kts... could be fun JOOBB_SMILEYCOOL

As for times and locations... being a westender, I suggested Sunnyside Park, Alan suggested Cherry Beach so I took a good look at the map. Problem with Sunnyside is it is 2.5KM to Centre Island and another 2KM to the harbour. Cherry Beach is about 1/2 KM to the eastern gap and you are in the harbour. Also, although there is a nice sheltered run from Sunnyside to Ontario Place, I can only see an open water route to the harbour proper. The only down side I'm seeing with Cherry Beach is that it is open to the west so a west wind could make for an interesting start/finish but over all I'm seeing it as the better option.

So, timing... sunset is about 8:40, I'm thinking arrive @ the beach about 8:00 for an 8:30 launch. Paddle for a couple hours, return about 11:00. I plan to head there from work (Dixie and Eglinton) grab dinner along the way. Am open for car pooling or company @ dinner. email me david-at-dragonsong-dot-ca

Summary:
Thursday August 7, 8:00PM
Cherry Beach Park, two hour paddle

A note on safety: In addition to the 5 items, we also need a 360 visible light, I plan on wearing a head lamp and carrying two spares. As well, add reflectors to your boat, we need to make ourselves visible.

Paddle Safe.

Just had the dog out for a late night walk. No wind, clear sky, bright moon. Hopefully it will be repeated tomorrow night.

Post how much fun was that!
by david.donaldson on 08/07/2009 01:11

JOOBB_SMILEYVERYHAPPY you guys missed out on what was possibly the best paddle of the season!!!

Weather was perfect, launched just before sunset, paddled into the harbour, then through the islands. A short portage and we were on the open water for the paddle home. 12.8KM, 3 hours, a great time was had by all...

Fingers crossed the next full moon has as good weather! JOOBB_SMILEYVERYHAPPY
