I don't know if this is appropriate (the 2nd item), but has anyone been to the Georgian Bay Storm Gathering. Anyone planning to go this October? Will I survive in a wetsuit and paddle jacket? Does anyone have an old drysuit for sale? Been meaning to get one but can't find a 2nd hand large and can't find a gortex large in the g.t.a. (that is in the store... everyone will order one, but who knows when and if I will like it for the price tag.)
Regardless of the drysuit woes, anyone have any feed back from the event... ie: will I die out there?
Cheers

paddle.... one blade or two!
I know it is way beyond the Storm Gathering, but I am feel I can give you a little feedback in regards to the Storm.
It is excellent. I attended for the first time last year (Oct 2010) and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Intermediate style paddlers gather and exchange thoughts, ideas, and fun. If you want more info check out the latest edition of Adventure Kayak. Oh ya, and I'm on page 20 (an article not about the Gathering) and 46 (article about the Storm). I did wear my drysuit and I believe it to be an excellent investment. I will say that I bought the Kokatat thru MEC but bought the Tropos. Much cheaper. I am the only person that I know who owns a tropos drysuit but will say that I seem to be the only person without any issues with my drysuit. And I will say that I paddle year round. There were some people present with wetsuits and paddling jackets and frankly, if you do it right, you won't get wet, but if you plan to do any cold weather paddling, a drysuit is an excellent investment.
Hope you attend next year. I will be.

I was there. It was beyond description!
I'll try, though.
I asked lots of questions. I stayed dry in my new Level Six drysuit. I am very happy with it, but that was cold weather. I want to see when it is warm.
The depth of knowledge and expertise was beyond belief. The site was gorgeous. Everyone nice and willing to share. I did a great ditch out in the surf on Sunday afternoon and I have been replaying the situation again and again until I glean every lesson from the experience (read "goof-up").To put a positive spin on my failed self rescue, I was told that I impressed because I doggedly tried to roll up 4 times before I finally bailed and 4 half rolls could count as 2 full rolls. How about that for positive reinforcement.
Great in every way. Don't go, though.... I want to make sure that there is space for me next year and every year!
Steve ;)
