Join us this year on one of our Paddle Canada Level 3 skills courses. James Roberts will be leading this 5 day experience out of Byng Inlet. Dympna Hayes will be assisting.
Content:
This course will help the participant to develop practical application of leadership, risk assessment, decision-making, judgment, group management, and general seamanship, in the context of a multi-day trip. Candidates will engage in a mulit-day journey that includes changing conditions and varying terrain. In a small group of paddlers the participants will take it in turns to lead and be lead. Depending on the conditions we encounter on the day the group will decide on the best trip route and then make decisions as conditions change. The Island archipelagos of the east coast of Georgian Bay give us plenty of possible routes to paddle. Shelter if we need it and exposure when we want it! At the start and end of the trip we also have the opportunity to paddle in the Magnetawan River. Here, if the Lake fails to provide us with the challenging conditions we are looking for we will have the chance to practice rescues, rolls and eddy turns. At Learntokayak.ca we feel that it takes away from both courses if a Level 2 and Level 3 skills course are joined as other outfitters do. Either the lake conditions and skills being taught are at too low or too high a level, leaving students bored or too challenged. It should also be noted that the learntokayak.ca Level Three Skills Course is five days whereas other schools courses are four. We believe this gives the candidates more time for coaching and theory lessons before being challenged and assessed.
Assessment:
Assessment is based on participants leadership skills, risk-assessment, decision-making, judgment and group management on our multi-day trip. Well developed skills such as graceful forward paddling, effective bracing, flowing maneuvering strokes together, confidence in waves and current, rolling and towing are necessary at this level.
