Prerequisites: Paddle Canada Level 2 certification or equivalent
experience, including intermediate/advanced paddling skills and a reliable (4 out of 5 minimum)
Roll on one side.
What to Bring: You are required to bring your own sea kayak (or contact learntokayak.ca for rental availability) and camping gear for this
course. Please use the following as packing guidelines:
• trip log of past paddling experience (if you have it)
•any kayak rescue or safety gear that you use (especially towlines, pigtails, stirrups, paddle
floats, flares, glow sticks, strobes, etc.)
•drysuit (preferably) or wetsuit (the water will be cold and you will be in it)
• reference materials that you have found useful
• pen, paper or notebook
• camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, tarp, headlamp) for overnight trip
• camping/cooking gear (stove, pots, water filter, etc.) and food
•compass (ideally both handheld and deck-mounted)
•VHF radio (not essential but preferred)
Paddling and Clothing List:
Drysuit and/or wetsuit and paddling jacket/drytop
neoprene hood and wool toque
pogies, neoprene gloves or neoprene mitts
neoprene booties
synthetic/wool clothing-2 complete changes
layered & thick thermal protection
full rainsuit

watertight boat with deck rigging
all Canadian Coast Guard requirements (pump, throw bag, etc)
paddle float
waterproof flashlight with spare bulb/batteries
paddling helmet
pens/pencils, notebook, ruler, orienteering compass, deck-mounted compass
repair/ouch/personal first aid/emergency kits
sleeping bag and pad or mattress
tent with tie downs for storm conditions
personal eating utensils (cup, bowl, spoon, etc)
waterproof map case
PFD with knife
extra rope
goggles - if required
glow sticks (For night paddling)
spare paddle
tow system
