Skills Clinics

These evenings are an opportunity to brush up on your paddling skills and to move forward into more advanced kayaking. Perhaps you’ve taken a level one Paddle Canada course and need a refresher clinic, or maybe you feel you need a little more work on your rescues to feel comfortable.

The Clinics

Sea Kayak Rescues
This is course is designed for paddlers with little to no kayak rescue skills.  We will start this 3 hour session by making sure everyone is comfortable wet exiting their kayaks.  We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, “It’s not if you get wet, it’s when you get wet!” Kayaking is a wet sport and we will help you prepare for when that happens.  The first rescue we will work on is an assisted rescue; next we will work on the self rescue with a paddle float.  For the remainder of the session we will take a look a a few variations including the scramble, stirrup and a couple of other helpful tricks every proficient kayaker should know! Participants should already know how to wet exit.

Advanced Sea Kayak Rescues
This course is designed for people who already know the basic assisted and self rescues and want to add skills and knowledge of rescues to make them safer paddlers or more proficient leaders on the water.  Rescues such as the scoop, hand of God (HOG), ladder and some other challenging all in scenarios.

Rolling
Rolling is a skill that most people in kayaking know or want to know how to do.  You can expect all of your paddling skills to improve once you can consistently roll.  With the increased comfort level in your boat and speed of capsize recovery you will loosen your hips and start edging further and with more control.  To save our poor instructors from having to stand in the water all evening we expect everyone on these sessions to have taken a kayaking course prior to this and to be adept at bow rescues.  Your expectations for this course should be to end up closer to rolling than you were when you arrived as rolling is a skill that takes a lot of practice to perfect. We will use a number of different exercises and tools including video analysis to help you, while our skilled instructors provide you with feedback and homework to get you closer to perfect rolling form.

Ladies Night.
All you sophisticated mammas  come out for an evening of skill refreshing, trick tweaking and general coaching from Dympna.  Forgotten half of what you learned in your Level 1 last year?  Want to secretly baffle your husband with your mad skills?  This is the clinic for you.  Taught by our very own super talented Dympna; Queen of the Greenland Stick and all round great coach.  She’ll help you add some style to your scramble, some pizzazz to your paddling and a general polishing of your skills.  Sorry guys, Girls only.

Stitching strokes together. (date from the dock moves)
Okay so you know how to make your kayak move in every direction comfortably, but you wish you were more efficient or looked a little cooler.  Maybe you’re trying to impress a fellow kayaker?  Well then come out and learn some of the tricks of the trade involved in rock gardening,  and generally maneuvering in and around marinas and fellow paddlers without looking like a newbie.
