Recreational Kayaking Skills

Essential Paddling and Safety Skills

Welcome to the world of Kayaking, the sport for everyone; which is why kayaking is one of the fastest growing sports in North America! Everyday more people are gaining an understanding of what kayaking is and the recreational kayakers are the fastest growing group.  Kayaking is a wonderful way to get outside, get some exercise, and explore your local waterways, an area you might otherwise not get to visit. For many, their kayak is a way to indulge in their other passions, which might be fishing, photography, bird watching or the quest for silence. Kayaking is also a way to make new friends, whether it’s paddling along the shore of your cottage lake visiting your neighbours, or by joining one of the many local paddling clubs in your area.

Now that you’ve decided to give kayaking a try, start counting how many people say to you, “Oh, you wouldn’t catch me doing that, you might get stuck under there!” After this course you can tell them, “Relax, I’ve flipped my kayak and lived to tell about it” ;0) Seriously though, although recreational kayaking is an incredibly safe sport, simply because you are surrounded by water while paddling, there are some essential safety and rescue skills as well as knowledge that we would benefit you to know before you head out for new adventures.

The Recreational Kayaking course is a 2.5 – 3 hour course where we will cover:

  • Safe paddling conditions for a Recreational Kayak
  • Essential safety equipment and using that equipment correctly
  • Parts of a kayak and kayak care
  • Launching and Landing your kayak and getting in and out safely
  • Paddling posture, holding your paddle correctly and torso rotation
  • Key strokes essential to getting your kayak to take you where you want to go!
  • The wet exit with or without a skirt

Depending on whether you have a sit-in or sit-on-top kayak, we will cover either Swimming your sit-in kayak to shore safely after a capsize, or re-entering a sit-on-top kayak.
